How to Reduce the Risk of PCOS

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (commonly referred to as PCOS) is a condition that affects the function of a person’s ovaries. This medical condition impacts between 5% – 20% of women who can reproduce. Women with PCOS produce higher amounts of male hormones (like testosterone) and tend to be unable to break down the metabolic hormone insulin. These abnormal hormones cause PCOS symptoms such as acne, missed menstrual cycles, fertility issues, and more.

Unfortunately, PCOS is poorly understood in the medical field, as there are still no definite answers to the question of what causes PCOS (whether it is due purely to cenetic factors in-utero, testosterone exposure, or other reasons). Both causes and symptoms are difficult to determine and treat. Regardless of this, there are certain things that one can do to control the genetic factors that lead to PCOS.

Exercise and Eat a Healthy Diet

Staying active and eating well are key to every healthy lifestyle, though it is especially important in reducing the risk of PCOS. Exercising and eating well can help control blood sugar levels, prevent insulin resistance, and reduce the risk of developing gestational diabetes during pregnancy. However, be sure not to over-exercise as it can lead to over androgen production.

Maintain Your Weight

This goes hand in hand with exercising and eating well. Maintaining a healthy weight will help control androgen and insulin levels, reducing the risk of PCOS.

Reduce Carbohydrates

This also goes hand in hand with maintaining your weight and eating healthy. Insulin levels are increased in people with high-carbohydrate diets. Avoid this to reduce the risk of PCOS.
