The Importance of Good Posture

Often in our daily lives, we tend to not think about our posture as we go through our routine. This can range from slouching in your chair at work to the way we walk. Over time, this can cause us to develop habits that go against proper posture. This is important to work on fixing as good posture has many benefits to our health and overall well-being.

Benefits of Good Posture

Alignment – keeping proper posture allows for your bones and joints to be aligned properly. This keeps muscles working properly and helps to prevent overstretching.

Health of Joint Surfaces – poor posture can cause abnormal rubbing and wearing of joint surfaces which can cause discomfort. When you practice correct posture, your joints won’t wear down as easily and will function properly.

Spinal health – the spine is often a targeted area when it comes to bad posture as we slouch in our daily lives. Correcting postural problems will prevent the spine from becoming fixed in abnormal positions that can cause pain and surrounding muscle dysfunction.

Prevent fatigue – with poor posture comes the misuse of certain muscles in the body. When posture is proper and muscles are working more efficiently, the body doesn’t have to use as much energy and will prevent fatigue.

Reduce Pain – with improper alignment, joint wear, and muscle misuse comes pain and discomfort. Fixing these issues by practicing good posture will help to reduce pain that can commonly be felt in the back and neck area.

Appearance – good posture helps build an overall confident appearance as the spine is straightened and allows us to stand taller.

Tips to Improve Your Posture

Flexibility – working on muscle flexibility will help to loosen the muscles that have become tight from misuse over time. Once they become more flexible and comfortable with mobility, the easier it will become to improve your posture.

Muscle Strength – often when we allow poor posture to take over, certain muscles in our body become weak as they are misused or left dormant. To improve your posture, work on strengthening the muscles prone to weakening such as the serratus anterior and deltoids in order to have better support.

Awareness – being aware of your posture throughout the day can go a long way in fixing mistakes that we often don’t think about. This can include actively remembering to sit up straight in your chair at work and when driving, or straightening your back when walking.
