The Basics of Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the basic foundation of traditional Chinese medicine. It aims to achieve balance between the opposing yet inseparable forces in our bodies called Yin (the passive and cold force) and Yang (the active and hot force). This is achieved through stimulating the anatomy of the body in order to encourage energy flow and balance within the body.

Acupuncture is preformed through the use of thin needles in specific points of the body. These specific points are recognized as vital pathways or meridians for energy flow. To stimulate them and cause the flow, needles are gently and carefully inserted into these points and are then manipulated by hand or electrical stimulation.

Acupuncture has been tested time and time again to prove whether or not it is useful in treating bodily pains and ailments. Despite the doubt and resistance that it is met with, the practice of acupuncture has continuously proven to help with various kinds of physical pains. It has been, and continues to be, used to help with postoperative nausea, chemotherapy side effects, osteoarthritis, lower-back pain, headaches, menstrual cramps, addiction, carpal tunnel syndrome and more. Acupuncture has proven to provide pain relief, improve function and mobility, relieve inflammation distress, and complement standard westernized care methods.

Maintaining the energy flow by regulating the nervous system and releasing endorphins and immune system cells at specific sites on the body is the most natural way of treating bodily ailments. In this way, acupuncture is commonly considered as a realignment tool that aids in targeting overall health and preventative health rather than targeting an individual issue. Because the body is a combination of functioning systems, acupuncture, and naturopathic medicine as a whole, aims to balance all things and keep them in good health in order to target the specific issue. Western medicine does not look at healing in this balanced and harmonious way.
