What is Stress?

 

Stress is your body’s way of responding to demands. Stress can originate from internal or environmental sources or be the by-product of being overworked.

 

 

 

Negative Impact of Stress

 

The negative side-effects of stress can be seen in three main areas of our lives: the body, mood and behavior. Ultimately, this leads to a reduced quality of life and can even inhibit our ability to perform our daily tasks. Here is how stress can manifest within us.

 

Impact on the Body

  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep problems
  • Upset stomach
  • And muscle tension or pain

 

Impact on Our Mood

  • Anxiety
  • Irritability or anger
  • Sadness or depression

 

Impact on Behavior

  • Overeating or undereating
  • Angry outbursts
  • Social withdrawal

 

 

So How Do We Combat Stress?

 

Despite all the undesired effects that stress can have in our lives, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Here are some practical tips for combating stress.

 

Identify the Source of Stress: Once you’re aware of the source(s) of stress in your life, you can begin putting measures in place to alleviate it. For example, if meeting deadlines is a major stressor, procrastination may be a negative habit you need to remove.

 

 

Replace Unhealthy Coping Methods: We all have different ways of coping with stress–the question is, “are they healthy or not?” Unhealthy coping methods can include smoking, excessive sleeping, lashing out at others, junk food or social withdrawal. These negative coping methods can be replaced with healthier solutions like exercising.

 

 

Maintain Connections: There is nothing quite as uplifting as spending quality time with those you care about. Humans are social creatures so make sure to keep good, trustworthy people in your life. They may not be capable of fixing your problems but just having a listening ear can be a huge comfort.
