How is Your Sugar Consumption?

Sugar adds a sweetness that makes it a sought-after addition to our food and beverages; however, consuming this soluble carbohydrate in high quantities can have adverse effects on your health. Eating sugar in excess has been connected to weight gain, type II diabetes and heart disease. Outlined below, are four benefits of minimizing your sugar consumption.

Clearer Skin

Sugar extracts the water from your cells, which dehydrates your skin in the process. When dehydrated your skin can appear puffy and you may experience under-eye circles. Drinking lots of water daily and eating a well-balanced diet is the best way to maintain clear vibrant skin. Also, constantly fluctuating blood sugar levels cause inflammation and internal stress, which leads to breakouts on the skin and cause it to look dull.

Healthier Teeth

Naturally-occurring mouth bacteria thrive on sugar. This means when you consume sugar-rich foods and beverages, you’re feeding this bacterium. Over time this will lead to plaque development that eats away at tooth enamel and encourages cavities and gum disease.

Better Brain Function

Furthermore, high sugar consumption impacts more than just your skin and dental care, but your cognitive ability as well. Eating too much sugar has the potential to negatively impact your learning and memory, as it can cause insulin resistance. This damages communication between brain cells and increases inflammatory stress on the brain and interfere with brain waves, which makes it harder to think clearly.

Superior Digestion

Too much sugar can cause inflammation in the stomach and lead to poor digestion since glucose is the only nutrient it can be broken down into. High blood sugar surges make the stomach more toxic, which can lead to personal discomfort as well.

Understanding the impact that added sugar can have on the body is only half the battle. It’s up to us to monitor our sugar intake and learn to only support healthy eating habits!
