How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture is a complementary medical practice that involves stimulating certain areas of the body, through needles penetrating the skin. This form of treatment can be used to treat a wide array of issues from physical issues to mental and emotional imbalances.

Acupuncture is an effective treatment method for numerous health problems including arthritis, migraines, muscle spasms, lower back pain, anxiety, depression and much more.

First Visit

This initial visit involves a comprehensive health history assessment. Having a solid understanding of your current health condition and any health issues you’ve dealt with in the past, helps the naturopathic doctor form a plan that’s right for you.

For instance, if a person has a bleeding disorder or is taking blood thinners, they may not be able to have this treatment. This is why discussing every patient’s health history is so crucial.

Treatment Process

When it comes time for treatment, the needles will be administered in specific locations. Depending on the practitioner the depth that the needles are placed may vary; however, they should never puncture an organ, other than the skin.

The needles will likely be left in place for approximately five to 20 minutes but may be left in longer, based off of the treatment plan that your practitioner has created. After the session, the practitioner will reassess the client and may suggest at home care to supplement the acupuncture treatment administered.

Side-Effects

One great aspect of this therapy is that it has minimal side-effects. Post-treatment, patients can experience minor bleeding and bruising at points of needle insertion. Soreness is also commonly exhibited after receiving acupuncture. Fortunately, major complications or adverse reactions are extremely rare when acupuncture is performed by a certified practitioner.
