Don’t Let Sickness Slow You Down This Winter

With winter fast approaching, there are many reasons to anticipate the upcoming season. From sledding and snowball fights to having a reason to wear your favourite thick sweaters, winter has many positives. Unfortunately, with colder temperatures comes an increase in illnesses. Don’t let being sick stop you from enjoying all winter offers, utilize these tips to stay healthy!

Get the Flu Shot

The winter is the most common time for illnesses, such as the flu. Getting your flu-shot in the fall gives your body the necessary time to build antibodies to fight off the flu. Although a flu shot doesn’t guarantee your safety from the flu, if you do become sick your symptoms will likely be milder. In 2016, the flu shot reduced your chances of getting the flu by 42%.

Clean Commonly Touched Surfaces

It’s important to remember that virus-causing bacteria can remain on surfaces for hours or even days. To avoid any illnesses, consider ‘targeted hygiene’. This is the practice of disinfecting areas where the spreading of bacteria is most likely to occur. For instance, doorknobs, faucets, television remotes and even copy machines work, likely come in contact with numerous people daily. Cleaning these items before and after use prevents the spreading of bacteria that can lead to you getting sick.

Stay Home

Whether you’re a member of the workforce striving to meet deadlines and projects or a student studying for the next test, we all need a rest at times. If you’re feeling under the weather, it’s better to take a sick day, where you can focus on resting and recovering, opposed to going to work or school where you’ll potentially get those around you sick and expose your body to more germs.

Take a Daily Multivitamin

During the winter months, we tend to be exposed to less sunlight, which means less vitamin absorption than in the warmer months. Daily supplements are available for all your necessary vitamins, such as Vitamin A, B6, B12, C, and D.
