Do You Skip Breakfast?

A healthy breakfast is a key component to starting your day the right way. Eating breakfast increases your energy levels, increases your metabolism leading to more burned calories and improves cognitive performance. Below are reasons why eating breakfast is important and what a healthy breakfast should consist of.

Improves Focus

Whether you’re an adult with a busy work schedule or a child in school, a well-balanced breakfast improves a person’s ability to focus and these individuals also tend to be less irritable or restless throughout the day. In the workforce, this can translate to higher productivity and young children in school are more likely to perform well academically when they have had a healthy breakfast to start the day.

Helps You Maintain Your Weight

Eating a protein and fiber-rich breakfast helps to keep your hunger in-check throughout the day and prevent overeating. Without a proper breakfast, you’re more likely to consume larger portions, which can lead to weight gain, throughout the day.

Keeps the Body in Rhythm

It’s important to remember, all night when you’re sleeping your body is fasting. This leads to most people having a low blood sugar level when they wake up in the morning, which impedes their muscles and brain from functioning at optimal levels.

A healthy breakfast breaks the body’s fast and gives it the essential nutrients to allow the body to operate at maximum effectiveness.

What Does a Healthy Breakfast Consist Of?

One key aspect of a healthy diet is variety. The portion size for your breakfast is heavily dependent on your age, activity level and diet goals; however, your plate should consist of 25% protein, 25% carbohydrates and 50% fruits/ vegetables. Examples of good breakfast foods are:

Eggs: Are an excellent source of protein. One egg provides approximately 70 calories and six grams of protein.

Whole-grain bread, cereal or fiber:This food category is rich in fiber which helps lower blood pressure and cholesterol.Consuming fiber helps keep us feeling full and gives us energy.

Fruits (blueberries, strawberries, mangos, bananas): You can’t go wrong with fruits! This food category is full of valuable nutrients for the body. For instance, blueberries serve as antioxidants for the body, while oranges are full of vitamin C and potassium.

Smoothies and juices can also be excellent sources of fruit. If you’re going the route of fruit juices, ensure you opt for 100% fruit juice or you’ll be consuming a lot of added sugars.
