Are You Tired of Spring Allergies?

After a long cold winter, many of us look forward to the warmer weather, longer days and brighter scenery that come with spring’s arrival. While these positive attributes make spring’s arrival highly anticipated, some individuals find their experience diminished because of seasonal allergies—environmental or inhalant respiratory sensitivities provoked by pollens, dust and animal dander.

Am I Experiencing Allergies or Am I Just Sick?

In some cases, common colds and seasonal allergies result in similar symptoms, so how can we tell the difference?With allergies, symptoms tend to hit you all at once and can continue as long as you remain exposed to the allergen. Once removed from the allergen, your symptoms will quickly go away. Symptoms in a common cold can take up to seven  to 10 days to begin leaving the body.

Common Symptoms of Spring Allergies

Depending on the person and allergen triggering the reaction, an individual can experience a wide range of symptoms. These can include:

  • Runny nose,
  • Sneezing,
  • Itchy eyes and nose,
  • Watery eyes.

How to Minimize the Effects of Seasonal Allergies

Make Changes to Your Diet

Certain foods have properties that fight against the symptoms of seasonal allergies. If you cope with any of the symptoms discussed above, consider ingesting some of these food options in larger portions:

  •  Whole grains, dark leafy vegetables and egg yolks are all high in Vitamin E;
  • Pineapple contains enzyme bromelain, which has is anti-inflammatory properties;
  • Fish high in oil such as cod, herring, mackerel, salmon, menhaden and sardines provide the Omega-3 fatty termed Eicosapentaenoic/EPA.

Desensitization

Desensitization is another treatment used to relieve allergies. This treatment exposes the patient to a diluted dose of an allergen to help his or her body recognize it and no longer react negatively to it.
It’s clearer if you define it in this way. This is one use for the m-dash that we never talked about.
