Are You Spending Too Much Time Sitting?

For many of us, sitting is a regular part of our day. Whether we’re at work, school or at home, sitting for extended periods of time has become an epidemic in the North American culture. Studies have shown that Canadians spend approximately 10 hours each day sitting. With so much of our time spent stationary and not activating the body’s various muscle groups, the overall health of Canadians is suffering and many of us don’t even realize it! Here’s how sitting can damage your health and steps you can take to improve it.

Dangers of Sitting Too Long

Are you aware the moment you start sitting, the electrical activity in your muscles begins to decrease and your calorie-burning rate drops to approximately a third of what it would be if you were walking? Sitting for more than six hours a day over the course of a year, will cause our muscles to atrophy and reduce our ability to burn excess fat (contributing to weight gain). As if this information isn’t bad enough, long periods of sitting increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, various forms of Cancer and even heart disease!

The negative impact of this sedentary lifestyle can increase or decrease, depending on how much time you spend in that position daily. If it hasn’t already been made very clear, sitting for extended periods of time throughout the day, is very negative for your health. So, what can be done about this?

How to Address the Issue

Fortunately, with small changes to your daily lifestyle, you can combat the negative effects of sitting. One way to do this is to make sure that you stand at least once every hour. Also, make time for at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily. If you don’t feel you’ll be able to make time for that amount of exercise, consider breaking it up throughout the day. For instance, instead of committing to 30 minutes of exercise all at once, break it up into three segments of 10 minutes. It’s important to make it at least 20 minutes of activity, so you’re exercising long enough to make it useful in your daily life.
