Are You Getting in Enough Steps Daily?


Staying active is essential to sustaining a healthy, fit lifestyle. For many of us, walking is a normal part of our daily routine, but have you ever thought of the health benefits that accompany it? Some of the benefits that accompany walking are:

  • Helps strengthen bones and muscles;
  • Improves your coordination and balance;
  • Assists in managing conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure and type-two diabetes.

 

Ways to Increase Your Daily Steps

 

Despite the role that walking plays in the majority of our lives, we may not be walking to the extent we should be. Studies have shown that if the average adult is getting in 10,000 steps per day, you are in the right ball-park for daily physical activity. It’s also important to consider the level of intensity your steps are performed at. It’s recommended that out of the 10,000 daily steps, 3000 should be performed through moderate to high-intensity activity.

At this point, you are probably wondering how you’re supposed to keep track of your steps as well as the intensity at which they were performed. A pedometer is a useful tool to use in tracking the number of steps you’re taking throughout the day. As a replacement for the actual gadget itself, pedometer apps have also been made available for mobile phones as well–both Android and iPhone.

Many adults can find increasing their amount of physical activity difficult, between work and family commitments. Fortunately, there are numerous ways to increase your steps in your daily life, here are some to consider!

  • Go for a walk on your lunch break;
  • Try taking the stairs wherever possible;
  • Go for a post-dinner walk around the neighbourhood;
  • Set an alarm on your phone for every hour and take a quick walk.

 

Upholding an active lifestyle gives you more energy and helps keeps your body feeling young. Although walking is a great exercise, try to incorporate other fitness options throughout your day. For instance, even using a standing-desk while working helps reduce back pain and lower your risk of heart disease.
