Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy

Having a baby is truly a reason to celebrate! Despite what may seem like a long and uncomfortable wait, the end-reward is a beautiful addition to your life that will make the process more than worth it.

As an expecting mother, there are many steps you can take to ensure you and your baby stay in the best health possible throughout your pregnancy.

Stay Active

Although pregnancy can make staying active more of a challenge, exercise is just as important when pregnant. Regular exercise will help control your weight, improve circulation and help you get the best sleep possible.

Pilates, yoga, swimming and walking are all excellent forms of exercise when pregnant; however, make sure to consult with your doctor prior to starting any exercise programs. 30 minutes of exercise daily is a good target, but it’s important to listen to your body and not overdo it.

Take a Prenatal Vitamin

Were you aware that your baby’s neural cord, which becomes the brain and spinal cord, develops in the first month of pregnancy? In taking an appropriate supply of the right nutrients is important to ensure your child is getting all it needs to grow!

Track Your Weight Gain

Weight gain is very normal during pregnancy, after all, you’re eating for two; however, putting on too many pounds can make losing them later a more difficult proposition. But simultaneously, not gaining enough weight can put your baby at risk for a low-weight birth, major cause for developmental issues.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends the following weight gain during pregnancy, based on a woman’s BMI (body mass index) prior to becoming pregnant with one baby:

  • Underweight: Gain 28-40 pounds
  • Normal weight: Gain 25-35 pounds
  • Overweight: Gain 15-25 pounds
  • Obese: Gain 11-20 pounds

Educate Yourself

Have you ever heard the saying, knowledge is power? Well, this is definitely true during pregnancy. Even if this isn’t your first baby, attending birth class gives you the opportunity to grow your knowledge about childbirth and infant care. This also gives you an outlet to ask specific questions or voice any concerns.
